Featured article Linoleum is derived from the Latin terms meaning flax (linum) and oil (oleum). Frederick Walton invented linoleum in 1863. Linoleum is made of oxidized linseed oil and ground cork or wood flour calendered into sheets with a burlap backing. Linoleum was a popular choice for residential and commercial buildings from the 1860s through the 1940s. It comes in several thicknesses and countless patterns.
